Eden Roc at Cap Cana hosts Michelin-Star Chef Roberto Allocca for week-long culinary extravaganza

February feasting programme spans Valentine’s Day and President’s Weekend

As part of the resort’s series of Delicious Journeys, Eden Roc at Cap Cana will be hosting Chef Roberto Allocca from Relais Blu for an exceptional culinary residency this February, inspired by his restaurant in Capri, Italy. Beginning with “Amore on the Coast”, a special Valentine’s Day dinner on February 14th at La Palapa by Eden Roc, Chef Roberto Allocca will prepare an exciting five course menu, serving Italian specialties such as Buffalo mozzarella with basil perfume oil and clam and lemon risotto. Allocca will then join Eden Roc at Cap Cana’s Chef Gianluca Re Fraschini for “Blu Eden” at Mediterraneo Restaurant on February 17th to showcase the cuisine of his Michelin-starred restaurant, Il Relais Blu. Courses will include roasted lobster with potatoes, artichoke and crustacean sabayon, paccheri with grouper ragù, pumpkin flower, black pepper and roasted orange, and duck magret, lacquered with topinambur and provolone ravioli.

Named Best Chef of Italy in 2011, Roberto Alloca began his early training in some of the best Italian restaurants. In 2013 he became Executive Chef of Relais Blu in Massa Lubrense, located between the coasts of Sorrento and Amalfi where his excellent work led him to achieve his first Michelin Star in 2014. The restaurant was born from the love for gastronomic culture of the Mediterranean, and Chef Roberto Allocca’s passion for the traditional and international cuisine was the key part of Relais Blu to achieve great success. The underlying philosophy of his work is combining local products and enhancing the taste with innovative cooking techniques without forgetting the true tradition. As a result, the majority of the ingredients are natural and grown directly from restaurant’s garden, and the excellent quality of his dishes has gained the restaurant many awards in the most prestigious food guides, as well as the coveted Michelin Star.

Other events of Eden Roc at Cap Cana’s Delicious Journeys week include “Sapori di Napoli”, a Neapolitan flavors cooking class at BLUE Grill + Bar and “Sorrento” a liquor class at the UVA Beach Bar inspired in the traditional Sorrentinian home-made Limoncello, both taking place on February 16th.

Memories of the Thomas Keller Golf & Gastronomy Weekend

Eden Roc at Cap Cana’s commitment to culinary excellence was on full display when we welcomed Chef Thomas Keller during our Golf & Gastronomy Weekend celebrated on November 15th -19th. Known for his exceptionally high standards, culinary skills and being the first and only American Chef to be awarded three stars in the inaugural Michelin Guide, Chef Keller’s visit sure elevated the resort’s dining experience as it marked a major culinary step for the first and only Relais & Châteaux property located in the Dominican Republic, also known as a culinary destination throughout the Caribbean. Our Golf & Gastronomy Weekend experience was an opportunity for guests to learn more about the iconic Chef’s cuisine and passion and had also been invited to challenge Chef Keller at the #1 golf course in the Caribbean and Mexico, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course Punta Espada.

The weekend’s line up started with a Meet & Mingle cocktail reception on Thursday, November 17 hosted by Chef Keller, followed by an intimate dinner featuring the Eden Roc team where we had the chance to enjoy seeing the celebrity Chef interact with guests. On Saturday, as the highlight of our Gastronomy Weekend we hosted The Gala-Dinner where Chef Gianluca Re Fraschini served a gastronomic feast at Mediterraneo Restaurant inspired by the legacy of Chef Thomas Keller.

Chef Koyi Tanabe, Chef Roquelinda, Chef Thomas Keller, Chef Gianuca Re Frashcini, Chef Alberto Garcia, Chef Juan Carlos Bobe, Giovanni Odaglia.

From the beginning Chef Keller inspired us with his mantra: “It’s all about Finesse”. A word of which he is fond of and sums of perfectly the image people have of him. It was an honor for Eden Roc to start the evening with such important words and Chef Keller willing to share his culinary experience throughout the years.

We were all gathered in one place to deliver a true gastronomic experience by creating dishes that reflect the Chef’s own applications of rigorous classical French technique to create a new style of fine American dining. Chef Gianluca Re Frashini brought his style to life with his European sensibilities to the evening’s feast by serving main dishes as the famous Oyster and Pearl, sabayon of pearl tapioca. Followed by Scorpion fish, grilled artichoke with warm “Castellucio” lentils beeze of lemon from Menton. Also serving Suckling pig from Segovia, roasted endive “Erfoud” dates pesto and Banyuls vinaigrette accompanied by perfect wine pairing options, soft live music and exclusive cookbook signing (The French Laundry Cookbook) during the event.

Among guests we had the pleasure to greet Joseph Essa – CEO of Wolfgang Puck Restaurant Group, Bill Anton – Chairman Emeritus of the Culinary Institute of America’s (CIA), Robert Walton – President of the Restaurant Association of Great Britain and owner of Nth Degree Dining Guide, Ciro Cascella  – Arturo Fuente Cigar Club, Fernando Hazoury – Vice President of Cap Cana’s Council, José Antonio González – CEO Iberostar Hotels, Ernesto Veloz – Bavaro-Punta Cana Hotel Association, Danilo Díaz Granados – Shareholder, and Giovanni Ricotti from  Los Corales Development.

The final event of the weekend, our Napa Style Sunday Brunch might just be the ultimate local experience, as it featured the celebrity Chef gathered among guests and Dominican artisans showcasing organic products at distinctive market stands where everyone was able to taste local culinary delights, and a colorful and fun environment followed by  “Merengue” dancing while enjoying gorgeous sea views at the resort’s beach club.

A bold new dawn in the Dominican Republic…

The Dominican Republic has no fewer than eight international airports.

That’s quite a haul for a country with little more than 10 million permanent residents, and speaks volumes about its reputation as the all-inclusive capital of the Caribbean.

But two hotels are bucking the watered-down rum punch trend — one on the quiet north coast, the other not far from the flesh-pots of Punta Cana on the island’s south-east tip. Both managed to withstand the recent hurricanes.

Amanera, near the comely fishing village of San Juan — around an hour’s drive from Puerto Plata airport — is the group’s 29th outpost, and it’s Aman in all its glorious purity, starting with the main building that looks like it’s either suspended from the sky by invisible wires or floating above its immediate surroundings like a yogic master.

There are 25 casitas (little houses) dotted around the hillside, many with their own pool, all looking down on Playa Grande, a sensational mile of golden sand with no other building in sight. It has to be one of the most spectacular beaches in the world, albeit that the Atlantic can throw up some bumper waves.

It’s a four-hour drive from Amanera to Eden Roc, an immaculate Relais & Chateaux hotel that opened only four years ago within the gated community of Cap Cana, a mere 15 minutes from Punta Cana airport to where BA flies three times a week.

There are 35 colourful casitas (pinks, blues and greens) at the main hotel, and 25 two-bedroom beach apartments.

It’s some beach: a sheltered cove with creamy white sand, clear turquoise water, swaying palm trees, the gentlest of swells.

There are two restaurants at the beach, one Peruvian and one broadly Mediterranean, but with a substantial sushi menu. Both are delightful, manned by staff who insist on you having a good time.

And you will. Eden Roc is really two resorts in one.

At the main hotel, there’s a slinky bar and a more formal restaurant just off the stone-floored lobby, where a cheery Damien Hirst painting has pride of place.
